Wildlife Watching

DownEast Acadia is a region full of vast wilderness areas that border on the unspoiled expanse of the Gulf of Maine. This is a place where wildlife can thrive, deep in their own habitat and even close by human activity, given Maine’s strong ethic of wildland and wildlife protection.

On the water, you can take an excursion to see the great whales—humpbacks, finbacks, and minkes—that seasonally frequent our water. Whether by guided excursion, tour boat, or on your own boat, you’ll see plenty of dolphins sluicing around you and harbor seals popping their heads above the surface or sunning¬†themselves on ledges. (Please don’t go too close to the ledges, and never pick up a baby seal.)

Among birds, you’ll see harlequin ducks waggling their way across harbors, herons swooping over marshes, ospreys perched in their huge nests atop trees, and eagles regally watching over all. You can even take excursions to the outer islands to spy the Atlantic puffin, often called “sea parrots” for their colorful look.

For a true Maine wilderness experience, you can take an inland excursion—by foot, canoe, kayak, air-conditioned van, or pontoon boat—to see the moose, Maine’s official state animal. Weighing over 1,000 pounds, with antlers reaching five feet across, they are majestic animals, most active at sunrise and sunset. You might even see a moose along the roads, nibbling the vegetation!

Other wildlife is commonly found everywhere from wilderness to suburb, including deer, loons, ducks, owls, fox, beavers, otters, chipmunks, and squirrels.

Our wildlife makes for spectacular sightseeing, as well as excellent hunting and fishing. Consider contacting the Maine Professional Guide Association for their expertise.
